Whenever I think of brunch and brunch food, there are a few things that automatically come to mind: bubbly cocktails, eggs dishes, pastries and pancakes. But sometimes you just want to try something a little different for your morning (ok, maybe more like 'mid-morning') meal. If that sounds like you, then you might find something just perfect for you and your taste buds at Pie Tap.
Pie Tap does have multiple locations but we opted for the location that sits on the end of the Design District in Dallas, at the point where there are more warehouses and industrial businesses than restaurants. That makes it a really great place to come for a low key, easy parking, delicious weekend brunch. And in a city that loves to brunch as much as Dallas, that's a pretty important distinction. When you walk in, you'll notice how bright it is--there are windows from floor to ceiling, making it very bright despite it's brick and metal interior. The kitchen area is pretty open and you can watch the chefs as they create each dish from scratch.
So lets get to the food and drinks, shall we? Of course, my first go-to was the mimosa--for those of you who are like me and you enjoy drinking a mimosa with a juice other than orange, you're in luck! Here you can get blackberry or pineapple instead. I went for the blackberry mimosa and was pleased with my selection. If I had to give it a ratio of juice to champs, I would say it was probably 40:60. A little heavier than I like on the juice but it WAS tasty. And if you like drink specials, you'll be happy to hear that the mimosas are only $3 each, or you can get a large 800ml version served in a beaker for only $10. My brunch date had the Raspberry and Basil Mojito. It was a refreshing drink but a little sweeter than anticipated.
Food time! Decided to go ahead and get one of Pie Tap's signature pizza pies. They make it fresh to order and I couldn't pass up the opportunity for some hand tossed pizza. I went with the Chicken Pie--diced rotisserie chicken, bacon, red onions, pepperoncini, cilantro, smoked mozzarella, hold the bourbon BBQ sauce. It was amazing. The chicken alone was worth it. Seriously. It was seasoned and tender and flavorful. That was enough for me but the flavors of all of the other toppings really made this pizza stand out. I got to the point where I was full but still took a few more bites because YUM.
Brunchlust rating: A Despite a renegade pigeon flying into the restaurant during our visit (don't worry, they caught him without incident and released him back into the wild of Design District) everything was on point. The food, service, and drinks were all great.
