Sinful Portions at Hash House a Go Go

Hash House a Go Go is one of those restaurants that is always mentioned as a must do. So Brunchlust did. With its original location in San Diego, the restaurant now has locations in Chicago, Connecticut, Orlando and Las Vegas. The opening of the Dallas area location in Plano was packed with a 2-hour wait a few months ago. So after the initial excitement wore down, we arrived at the restaurant on a Saturday to a 15-minute wait.

One of the things that I noticed about this place is that it really is not your typical type of breakfast/brunch space. When you walk in to the hostess stand, you’ll notice 2 bars to either side of you. They both display signs that say children cannot be seated at the bar. If you do have kids, don’t let that deter you from visiting. The place is very family friendly. Tons of indoor seating and a couple of patios as well.

On to the food. And when I say there is SO MUCH FOOD at Hash House. My word. It’s almost criminal. Aside from its farm-to-table food concept, Hash House a Go Go is known for its sinfully sized portions. I opted for the roasted chicken house hash but I ordered it deconstructed with eggs on the side. My friend had the banana french toast. We shared an order of the chicken sausage.

I have to say that the food did not live up to the hype for me. The roasted chicken was very dry. Nothing was particularly flavorful. The highlights of the meal were the biscuit and the chicken sausage. Portion sizes were HUGE. I noticed a couple sharing a plate of the chicken and waffles, which really is the way to go.

No brunch cocktail carafe options here to speak of, but the poinsettias are served with a sugar cube. That put a unique spin on a classic. $5 a pop, which is pricey compared to other brunch cocktail options. Hash House has a full bar.

I would go back again and try something else. Maybe they had an off day? Next time, I’ll opt in for a nontraditional breakfast item. They have a pretty good happy hour and blue plate dinner selections. Plus, you can brunch every day, all day here.

Brunchlust Rating: C I really wanted to love the food here but it just wasn’t a hit for me.
